Seashell {Process Post}
Good morning! I am slowly working through a backlog on posts I need to make! Today I want to talk about my process of drawing Seashell, July Patreon theme.
Seashell is a theme about a girl who wants to listen to the sounds of the ocean. When I drew it, I LOVED it a lot and it was one of the most enjoyable pieces I drew even though it not one of the more popular themes haha! This theme holds a special place in my heart because it reminds me a lot of my childhood.
I love and fear the sea. When I was a child, I collected a ton of seashells. My grandma gifted me large amounts of them, and there was a spiky conch shell similar to what I drew among the collection. I spent lots of time listening to the echoes inside the shell, closing my eyes and thinking of crashing waves on the shores within murky depths of the deep.
This drawing is based on that feeling of immersing oneself in that sound. She is dressed simply for the beach, with white sandals, loose garments and a pair of headphones. Her loose light jacket have accents of seafoam ripples and a pearl anklet adds a touch of fashion sense to her.
The background for this drawing is clean and white because there is nothing but sound around her. I wanted it to have a white room effect.
A lot of times when I draw something that I want to be more realistic, I like to add thumbnails of their tiny versions on the side. When I opened the file again, I saw the little seashells that I referenced for this piece on it and thought it was amusing so I took a screen shot of it haha. I like to add my personal taste to it so even though the seashell is referenced from a real life photo, there are touches of abstraction to it!
The sticker sheet design is a simple one. I wanted to show different types of seashell and the character again. Sometimes it is nice to do a simple, not tricky sticker sheet. I did took great care to add little holographic accents to it similar to how the beachy sand tends to sparkle in the sun!
Thank you so much for reading this today and I hope I can post more writeups when I got the time since I really love my themes and I take a lot of care thinking about their meanings.
