Firefly & Lily - July Theme {Process Post}
Good evening, as the heat of summer is among us, it's time to talk about July's theme, Firefly & Lily. I thought of this theme earlier on this year. I know that around summer, I really want to make a firefly theme to celebrate summer and July is the perfect month.
Originally the theme was simply Firefly with a firefly girl but the image of firefly often goes so well with flowers and even though I do not know if Lily of the Valley is a summer flower, the small white bulbs goes really well with the glowing dancing insects.
In the beginning, I already have a design for the firefly girl. I imagine a character in the middle of the night in her pajamas. Seeing the glowing lights of fireflies, she slip on some shoes and goes outside to see the glowing lights among lily of the valley flowers.
To contrast with the darkness of the night, I want the character to have a strong contrasting color. Because I also want to explore a glow-in-the-dark effect with the pin design, I decided to use a minty green color for her character. I want her to be a elf like character with firefly wings so I took care to make her wings feel like bug wings with light transparency on it. This color scheme is super fun to me as I love simple color schemes with white hair. I love shading in the wrinkles of her dress and lining the ruffles of her skirt.
Because it is hard to see fireflies in the postcard design (they are just glowing dots), I decided to design a border with firefly and lily motifs so that the theme is more obvious. I went through so many firefly versions for the border. Initially the firefly is more realistic but close up, firefly bugs are pretty scary looking so the end result is a more abstracted firefly design.
Sticker Sheet
I like to talk about the sticker sheet this time because the sticker sheet composition was A LOT of work lol. After the postcard design, I wanted to draw the Firefly girl wandering in a "field of flowers " but at the same time, the design should still work as a sticker sheet.
By splitting the design into flipped mirrored composition, you can view the design as a story of the Firefly girl's nighttime trip, wandering amongst the fireflies like a magical dream.
Thank you so much for reading and I hope you like this design!
Thank you for reading, have a good day!
