Constellation Project {Process Post}

Hello! Today I want to share some process on a project I am currently working on. This is a commissioner project but they are paying me to draw the imagery and the right to merchandise it overseas but I will keep the rights to the image so I am able to show the work and print it later on. I got the sketches to a place where it's starting to be ready for linearting so I thought it will be cool to give you a sneak peak. :) 

The theme is constellation and my idea is to create modern day variations of the astrology signs. What will their personality be? What is their job? I will imagine they all live under the same roof with strange personalities. 

Shape Forming

Because there are 12 constellations I will have to draw I first decided to create basic shapes and gestures for what I want each character to be doing. I find that it helps with figuring out the proportions and movement for each character quickly without burning out. It also helps me make sure that each character gets equal amount of quality treatment so none is more favorable than others.

Sketching

Then I started to filling in the shapes with sketchy lines. Because the poses are done hastily with shapes, it's a lot faster to sketch though it and not get as tired. From this process I am starting to get the details of each character more and more. I want to fill in the space with a symbol of the astrology sign otherwise I feel that they might not look fully in character. I am definitely taking a lot of liberties with it. (Btw they are all girls for consistency with what the commissioner hope to do with them even though some are really tomboyish like Libra) 

I don't know much about astrology so many of these characters are super out of character haha. But I think it's fun to draw vaguely and I had a lot of artistic interpretation for this project. Since this project is due around September I will have ample amount of time to draw it (and will post on twitter too some of my completion *-* ) Some designs I am not happy and I might go back to edit (random thoughts):

• Scorpio: Not sure if I should do with helpful nurse or crazy doctor. I like the idea of poison and healing and I am a bit afraid of going to crazy for too much inconsistency. I might add a bit more poison in the mix since it looks like too much healing right now.
• Lio: Not sure about the little chibi lion, may replace with more meat or bone haha. Might replace chibi lamb too since it's a bit out of place. 
• Libra: Might give her a hat, might add a cat. She needs a lil something more. 

When I draw characters, I will often receive messages asking if they will be a pin theme for the month. For these characters, since I do own the right to them after completion, I might! (It will be a full year thing though haha) For now, I have been trying to work through a huge list of characters I have drawn before so the next few themes will be characters I already designed u vu /.
