Bonsai Postcard + Sticker Design {Process Post}

Bonsai is April's theme for Patreon and for that, I drew a caretaker of bonsai. I actually do NOT have a green thumb. In fact, I think I am more of a plant killer but there once was a phase last year where I was absolutely obsessed with bonsai trees. 

Watching hours of videos on their care out of pure fascination is where I got the inspiration for this theme. I can honestly go for paragraphs about what defines as bonsai tree or the many detailed ways to care for it as it a rather meticulous hobby! Instead I feel that as a watcher and not a master of that craft, I wish to approach the topic as a joy of watching someone take care of them. 

So for the sticker design and postcard design I wanted to show the love and care of these trees. The postcard shows the caretaker's collection and the sticker sheet shows the steps of care, from pruning to cleaning the bases and little saplings from where trees are grown. I also thought it was fun to place the character really small in contrast to the actual smallness of the trees. For such a small tree, to take care of it, is a rather herculean effort.

I think bonsai is a fascinatingly topic besides the cute physical of little trees and its a super large hole to sink into. If there is free time you have, its really fun to look at the different breeds of bonsai, different ways bonsai is categorized, famous bonsai trees (YES THATS A THING just like famous koi fish!), expensive bonsai trees!
